I think Will D. told me this puzzle. At some point I should email him to get the correct version.
So I think I have a solution that uses one plane fewer than the given solution (so 3 in all, including the plane making the whole trip). Should I just replace the given solution or edit it? I would prefer to treat the trip as being on a line with endpoints identified like
O--1/8--1/4--3/8--1/2--5/8--3/4--7/8--O
